Bang! That's the sound of me starting something that I intend to do regularly but probably won't do again. June had quite a bit going on. [identity profile] tre.praze.net's mum was over for a few days at the start of the month and [identity profile] tre.praze.net was away in Lisbon for a week so I went to stay with mum and dad. I also had my bi-monthly on-call week which was a little busier than usual but nowhere near as bad as the days when I used to get 10+ call outs a week. [identity profile] tre.praze.net and I were also travelling to Brussels at the end of the month (her for a conference, me for chocolate and beer) Anyway here's some of what I did in June 2025.

Films

The Omen Pentology box set has probably been in the "to watch" backlog for longer than any other DVD I own. I did manage to watch the original last year but that was as far as I got. This month I decided I was going to try and plough my way through the rest of it.

I think my attitude to The Omen as a franchise is basically the same as my attitude to Alien. The first one is sort of ok but the sequels all seem to misunderstand what it was that gave the original it's appeal.

Damien: Omen 2 - Not great but not completely terrible. One problem is that the deaths just aren't nearly as cool as the ones in the original.

Omen 3: The Final Conflict - A little bit better than the second one mostly because:
a) Sam Raimi is in it.
b) Roche Rock in the land of [identity profile] tre.praze.net is featured.

Omen IV: The Awakening - A really dreadful TV movie that quite rightly killed the series (at least until the remake.) Doesn't quite make it into "so bad it's good" territory.

The Omen (2006) - Visually I think this is the strongest one apart from the original. Doesn't mean it needed to be made though.

There was also a prequel (The First Omen) which was released last year. My expectations weren't high for that but it seems to have been quite well received so I might have to watch it.

House of the Dragon - Watched the first episode of season 2. I did actually read Fire and Blood before watching this (having already seen season 1) so we'll see how much that informs my opinion. The general consensus online seems to be that it's worse than season 1.

Gaming

Rise of the Ronin - I've been playing this since at least the start of the year so I probably need to pick up the pace. It's a bit repetitive but generally pretty fun.

Ratchet & Clank 2 Remaster - Last year I played through the Jak and Daxter remaster for PS3 and was really blown away by how well it still holds up. I played the Sly remaster before that so this year I decided to complete the trilogy of nostalgic platformers with Ratchet & Clank. I'm pretty close to finishing the second one and I'm sad to say that unlike the others this one just didn't hit. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why. There are lots of positives like the music and the "capitalism bad" themes but somehow it just doesn't grab me like the others do.

Reading

Equal Rites - I'm a huge fan of Wyrd Sisters so I thought I'd give some of the other Discworld novels a chance. I have this one in Compact Discworld format (actually it might have been dad's at one time) so I can experience maximum ocular discomfort. I only started this towards the end of the month so I haven't really read enough to form an opinion.

Plays

The Importance of Being Earnest - Even more enjoyable than I expected. It was nice to see something really light and fun - felt a bit like eating a nice sorbet. Between scenes they had these Terry Gilliamesque animated sequences which [identity profile] tre.praze.net and I really enjoyed (and could even have used more of.)

Music

Had to take over [identity profile] tre.praze.net's role as principal timpanist in the amateur orchestra we play in. No beaters were available so I had to use teaspoons instead (tells you all you need to know really.) The two pieces we played were:

Arriaga - Symphony In D
- As with most music we play in the amateur orchestra I was indifferent to this at first and then it really grew on me. Arriaga wrote this when he was 17 (2 years before he died) which is pretty ridiculous and very based.

Mendelssohn - A Midsummer Night's Dream - It's the one with the wedding march. The Overture is a slapper (and was also written by a 17 year old.)

Baking

Sticky Toffee Pudding - A rare instance of me baking something for humans other than myself and the missus. This is a Nigella recipe so no meecrowavays were harmed in its making.

Flan Patissier - So good I made it twice. Basically just a way for me to practice making sweet shortcrust pastry. I've started using the technique described in the big patisserie book I bought last year. This video shows it quite well. I find that it makes the final cooked pastry much smoother than the techniques I used previously.

Peanut Butter Cookies - From Delia's Book of Cakes. Nice, subtle peanut butter flavour. I like making biscuits every now and then because they're quick and not as technical as the patisserie stuff.

Some other baking-related news - last year my parents bought me a gift card for a pastry-making class but a firm date was never set by the organisers. I got an email to say that it's now been scheduled, so that's exciting.

Home Improvements

Finally got the fence and the door to the utility room fixed (hooray!)

Running

Parkrun times for this month are:

2025-06-07 - 00:23:29

That's it actually. I did do one other parkrun this month but it was an awful day and the rain destroyed my printed barcode sheet so I have no record of my time :(

1. What did you do in 2024 that you'd never done before?

Went to see Judas Priest!

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Didn't make any and probably won't make any for next year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth, get married or engaged?

The few friends we have who are around our age are all married now so this question is probably redundant going forward.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No.

5. What countries did you visit?

We broke our tradition of only going to the UK and Holland this year by going to France.

6. What would you like to have in 2025 that you lacked in 2024?

More social interaction.

7. What dates from 2024 will remain etched upon your memory?

None really come to mind.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Even more major breakthroughs with my guitar technique. I think this is probably the most progress I've made with guitar from one year to the next. I learnt to sweep pick which is one of those techniques that always seemed unattainable for the longest time. I also learnt to play the solo from Bark at the Moon which feels like a pretty significant milestone.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Nothing specific comes to mind.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

No.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I bought this OWON DGE2035 function generator to replace the XR2206 function generator kit I built in 2021 which was fine but just a bit fiddly for more frequent use.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

No-one springs to mind.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Personne ne springez au cerveaux.

Probably Set You Free by Black Label Society.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? Definitely happier.

ii. thinner or fatter? Definitely thinner. At the beginning of 2024 I restarted the Commando Workout I used to do when I was a teenager and lost quite a bit of weight. I've definitely put some of it back on during the winter months but I think that's hard to avoid.

iii. richer or poorer? Richer. I got promoted and now have some meaningless title like "technical lead."

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Socializing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Avoiding social interaction.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

At [profile] tobli's mum's house.

21. Is there a particularly memorable meal you had?

I did have an entire Pyrex dish full of French buttercream but I'm not sure if this is what the question is getting at.

22. Did you fall in love in 2024?

I've been in love with [profile] tobli since 2017.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?

0

24. What was your favorite TV program?

I didn't really start anything new this year. I've still got to work my way through the remaining seasons of 24 as well as season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh which I started re-watching recently.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I would honestly struggle to say that I actually "hate" anyone.

26. What was the best book you read?

Fire and Blood by George R^2 Martin. It was probably the fastest I've read a book of that length.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I don't listen to much rap so I decided to give this a go.

The opportunity to play my guitar in front of other humans :(

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Probably Conclave.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old are you now?

Went for a 6 course tasting menu with accompanying wines which has become the standard way to celebrate birthdays over the past few years. 31.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Having the opportunity to play my guitar in front of other humans.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2024?

Wearing clothes that are probably too big for me but also not wanting to buy smaller sizes in case I put on weight again.

34. What kept you sane?

Doing new things.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you like the most?

Very out-of-pocket answer but I like Zendaya and her choice of a male partner who is shorter than her.

It's pretty rubbish that Trump got re-elected but at least we got rid of the Tories.

Maybe the husband of the lady who conducts the amateur orchestra that [profile] tobli and I sometimes perform in.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2024.

I think I've gotten at least a little bit better at not procrastinating.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by You're thinkin' like a fool 'cause it's a case of do or die. Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had If you think I'll let it go you're mad You've got another thing comin'.

Moderator I submit my report.

1. What did you do in 2023 that you'd never done before?

Built a PC - haven't got round to installing Windows yet though...
Lots of other minor things but nothing significant enough to warrant a mention.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't really do new year's resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth, get married or engaged?

A close friend got engaged.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No.

5. What countries did you visit?

England and Holland.

6. What would you like to have in 2024 that you lacked in 2023?

More social interaction (although I think 2023 was better than 2022 on this front.)

7. What dates from 2023 will remain etched upon your memory?

None really come to mind.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

More major breakthroughs with my guitar technique. Hopefully it continues into 2024.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Nothing specific comes to mind.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I got food poisoning while [profile] tobli and I were in Utrecht which was a shame because I'd been really enjoying myself up to that point. It wasn't that serious but I was so tired and dehydrated afterwards that I ended scrapping the other stuff I had planned :(

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Fairly boring answer but probably a round, tupperware box for cakes.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

One of my coworkers received a best employee award which was very well deserved. He's one of those rare people who does his job well and is liked by everyone.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

I wouldn't go as far as "appalled and depressed" but a friend of my mum's has been acting in a way that could be termed "not good."

14. Where did most of your money go?

Probably food.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Similarly to last year it was probably breakthroughs with my guitar playing.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2023?

Probably Heroes End from Stained Class by Judas Priest just because I kept playing this riff on guitar.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? I'm going to say happier.

ii. thinner or fatter? Definitely thinner. So much so in fact that several people have commented on it. That being said I'd be amazed if I hadn't gained some weight over Christmas.

iii. richer or poorer? Richer. My salary went up a bit this year.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Socializing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Avoiding social interaction.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

[profile] tobli and I spent it at my parent's house.

21. Is there a particularly memorable meal you had?

Probably the 6 course tasting menu (with wine pairings for 5 of those courses) we had for [profile] tobli's birthday.

22. Did you fall in love in 2023?

I've been in love with [profile] tobli since 2017.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?

I have never and almost certainly will never have a one night stand.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Not a new TV program but I started watching 24 in September. I bought season 3 (I think) in CeX years ago thinking it was the entire show but never got round to watching it. I was sorting through my old DVDs last year and realized I needed to go out and buy the first 2 seasons. I'm blown away by how good it is and how well it still holds up.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I don't think I really "hate" anyone.

26. What was the best book you read?

To my shame I haven't finished a single book this year. I started Tales From Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin but I'm not even a third of the way through it.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Actively seeking out new music isn't something I really do which is strange considering how much I enjoy listening to music.

28. What did you want and get?

A better work-life balance (for the most part anyway.)

29. What did you want and not get?

The opportunity to play my guitar in front of other humans.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Probably the new Hunger Games film. Millennials gonna millennial I guess.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old are you now?

I think I might have been on-call so we ended up staying in the house and having a boring pizza.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Having the opportunity to play my guitar in front of other humans.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2023?

As ever I am blue.

34. What kept you sane?

Doing new things.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you like the most?

I don't really follow celebrities/public figures.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

I feel like climate change is the only political issue I really have strong feelings about which has been the case since forever. I'm not really interested in politics which I think is sort of irresponsible but I struggle to give a fuck about it.

37. Whom did you miss?

No-one really.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Maybe the organizer of the badminton club I started going to.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2023.

This sounds extremely clichéd but try to live as if you're life might not go on for that much longer. A slightly watered down version of "treat every day like it's your last."

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?

Before you're in a corner
Can't crawl away
Here's a way to save you

You got to push
Get out of my way and push
You can turn the wheel, push
One more push

I've got quite a few long, high effort posts sitting in drafts so this is an attempt to be more spontaneous.

I've been having a nice and productive week so far. Tasks are being accomplished but it's not all grindy "do the ironing, move the saucepan lids around" type stuff so that keeps the old dopamine flowing. I was supposed to go into the office today but rain stopped play and I decided to WFT* instead which turned out to be a good thing because halfway through the big All Hands meeting the office internet took a shit and died.

Something I feel like I've gotten much better at this year is minimizing food waste and keeping on top of what's in the cupboards and fridge (the freezer is where the drum from my ice cream machina lives in perpetuity - occasionally joined by frozen peas.) I made Nigella's fantastic sticky toffee pudding recently and I had a small amount of dates leftover (too few to use in another recipe but too many to just eat unaccompanied like a savage.) I thought they might be just about tolerable chopped up fine and scattered over ice cream but it turned out to be a great combination and now I wonder if I should just make vanilla and date ice cream in earnest using the aforementioned maker.

In closing here is a verse from one of the greatest rap songs of all time (O God, our help in ages past):

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all it's sons away;
They fly forgotten as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

*At the last place I worked one of my coworkers persistently abbreviated working from home as WFT for reasons that were never revealed and I think on't often.

"When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm in a part of the UK other than the one I live in."

So I've always been a huge fan of magazines. I think a big part of this is the sheer range of subjects they cover. It does my soul good to know that someone out there is leafing through the latest issue of Sea Angler. Unfortunately the exodus of Eason from the motherland has made it harder for me to pick up my favourite publications when the mood strikes. Fortunately [profile] tobli and I do find ourselves in other parts of the UK (and the "other place") on occasion and while there it's become a tradition for me to stock up on zines. Here are a few of my favourites:

Guitar World:

In my younger and more vulnerable years I used to acquire a lot of guitar tablature. The trouble was that whether these were free online tabs from sites like Ultimate Guitar or "proper" ones from actual licensed books of tablature they were generally pretty crap. Guitar World was the first time I'd seen tabs that sounded close to the original recording and were written idiomatically. I bought my first issue in July 2007 and have continued to do so on and off since. Each issue has 4-5 tabs from different artists and they occasionally publish Guitar Legends which focuses on a single artist.

BBC Good Food:

Leaving aside the fact that you need to re-mortgage your house to afford it, BBC Good Food has also earned its place among the favourite zines. In all honesty I think the recipes sometimes look better than they taste, but this magazine is really more about selling you a lifestyle than making you a fantastic home cook. There's just something cosy and friendly about sitting down to flick through its glossy pages.

Practical Electronics:

The most recent addition to the favourite zine family. There's plenty of electronics-related info on the net but it's a bit like trying to learn programming from a Udemy course (you get stuck in tutorial hell.) The projects and articles in Practical Electronics really help bridge the gap between individual circuit "building blocks" like current mirrors and push-pull outputs and complete circuits like power amplifiers. They also have a PCB Service where you can order PCBs for projects published in past and future issues.

Anyway that's the end, get this down ye.

1. What did you do in 2022 that you'd never done before?

Bought a house! Was best man (actually joint best man) at a wedding.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't really do new year's resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth, get married or engaged?

My best friend got married.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No.

5. What countries did you visit?

England, Scotland and Ireland.

6. What would you like to have in 2023 that you lacked in 2022?

More social interaction. This will be a theme.

7. What dates from 2022 will remain etched upon your memory?

The only one that really comes to mind is the 5th July which was the date of my best friend's wedding. I was joint best man and doing the speech was the only really stressful thing I had to do this year.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

From roughly the middle of this year I've been really attacking the problem of how to improve my guitar technique. As a result I've made probably the biggest breakthroughs in my playing since I started learning the instrument.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I let a few bad experiences colour my thinking too much.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Nothing remotely serious. I've been lucky to have a very good standard of health which is something I try not to take for granted.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

This is pretty pathetic but several sets of small plastic drawers for organising my electronic components. It saves so much time when building circuits.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I'd like to give a shout out to my father papa [personal profile] lissajous who has always been and continues to be a paragon of virtue.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

In terms of people I actually know no-one really. On a broader scale Putin is a cunt obviously.

14. Where did most of your money go?

House, food and booze in that order.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Breakthroughs with my guitar playing.

16. What song/album will always remind you of 2022?

I'm not really sure that there is one. I listened to Suits and Ladders by NOFX a lot but there's no particular significance to that.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? Probably much the same although this is the sort of question I find really hard to answer.

ii. thinner or fatter? Again probably much the same. My weight has gone up and down a lot this year as it did last year.

iii. richer or poorer? Well [profile] tobli and I bought a house so that put a big hole in our collective pocket.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Socializing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Avoiding social interaction.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

At [profile] tobli's mum's house.

21. Is there a particularly memorable meal you had?

[profile] tobli and I went out for dinner with my parents for my dad's birthday and I was really impressed with the tasting menu we err... tasted. In terms of my own cooking there's a crab and fennel spaghetti dish I made which has stuck with me.

22. Did you fall in love in 2022?

I've been in love with [profile] tobli since 2017.

23. How many one night stands in this last year?

I have never and almost certainly will never have a one night stand.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

The only TV show I've watched this year has been House of the Dragon and I've only seen one episode so far but I loved it. I tend not to watch a lot of TV shows because they eat up a lot of time and even if I don't like them I feel compelled to watch the whole thing.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I don't think I really "hate" anyone.

26. What was the best book you read?

Very boring answer but The Lord of the Rings.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Probably the Devin Townsend Project.

28. What did you want and get?

A house.

29. What did you want and not get?

A job I really enjoy. I started a new job around September last year and it only really got going at the start of this year. I don't hate it but I could probably find something more interesting.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

I think the only film we saw this year was Sonic 2 haha.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old are you now?

I don't think we did anything although we did have sushi a few days later. 29.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Probably just pushing myself more to do things outside my comfort zone.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2022?

I'm blue.

34. What kept you sane?

Cooking/baking something new can instantly improve my mood. Particularly if I've had a stressful/boring day at work.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you like the most?

I don't really follow celebrities/public figures. [profile] tobli and I virtually attended a talk by Tim Berners-Lee and he seemed like a good dude.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

I feel like climate change is the only political issue I really have strong feelings about which has been the case forever. I'm not really interested in politics which I think is sort of irresponsible but I struggle to give a fuck about it.

37. Whom did you miss?

No-one really.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

It's got to be the retired statistics professor we met at [profile] tobli's friend's wedding.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2022.

To grow as a person you need to do things that seem scary or difficult.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year?

This is tricky one so I'll borrow [profile] tobli's answer which also seems fairly appropriate for me.

From [community profile] thefridayfive

1. What is your favorite vegetable?

Brussels sprouts (sautéed not boiled.)

2. What is your favorite fruit?

I feel like this question is probably looking for a 'fruit you have from the fruit bowl' answer but I would probably choose lemon for its versatility as an ingredient.

3. What is your favorite cheese?

Probably goat's cheese in a dish where the cheese is meant to be the start of the show. For a cheese to have on its own I would maybe choose a blue cheese like gorgonzola.

4. What is your favorite dessert?

To say I have a sweet tooth would be a huge understatement so this is a really hard one to answer. I think the desserts I enjoy the most are the ones you get at a fairly high-end restaurant where there are lots of different components (a little bit of sauce, a quenelle of sorbet, meringue, chocolate crumb...) In terms of something you'd make in your own kitchen I really like this slightly odd meringue-based dessert from Charleston - https://eu.southernkitchen.com/story/recipes/2021/08/09/huguenot-torte/5537914001/

5. What is your favorite beverage?

Without getting into individual categories of beverage I will say any cocktail that's based around ginger beer such as Dark and Stormy, Moscow Mule, El Diablo etc.

From [community profile] thefridayfive

1. What's taking up space in your head this week?

I've been thinking (as I often do) about the extent to which people can change fundamental aspects of their personality.

2. What mental health topics do we need to be more aware of?

The "seriousness" of a mental health issue is very hard to pin down because we all have different tolerances.

3. What does "mentally healthy" look like?

Totally depends on the individual.

4. When do you know you need to focus on yourself?

For me some indicators include weight gain, feelings of self-hatred and cognitive overload.

5. What's something that's helped your mental health?

Realising that by fully embracing my unusual way of doing things (making lots of Word documents about things basically lol) I can be more productive and happier.

Here's a big ol' list of all the cocktails I've made since Septemberish last year. In no particular order:

Mojito
White Russian
Old Fashioned
Woo Woo
Cosmopolitan
Tequila Sunrise
Sidecar
- First with brandy then with bourbon (brandy's better IMO)
Margarita
Daiquiri
Whiskey Sour
Kir Royale
Pornstar Martini
Pina Colada
Moscow Mule
Dark and Stormy
Screwdriver
Tom Collins
Bloody Mary
Gin Martini
Gin Fizz
El Diablo
Pimm's
Blue Lagoon
Espresso Martini
Blue Hawaiian
Mint Julep
Lemon Drop
Ruby Slipper
Rusty Nail
French Martini

Many more are sure to follow!
Oh boy...

As always I have a ridiculous list of unrealistic goals that probably won't be anywhere near done by the end of the year - the fact that I'm only writing this post now should be evidence of that. I've split them up into categories and added some thoughts. In no particular order:

Diet and Exercise

My weight has gone up and down like a yoyo over the years. At one point in my life I was getting a takeaway pizza for dinner at least 5 nights a week and at another I was doing 10ks and even the occasional half marathon on a semi-regular basis. I'm just not too great at moderation (in all areas of life but especially here). I think this happens for 2 reasons:

1. I just like food too damn much. I eat to celebrate, I eat to cheer myself up when things aren't going well, I eat when I'm tired and have no energy, I eat when I'm bored... you get the idea. Everything about the process of preparing and eating food is really enjoyable to me and so it's not easy to stop.
2. Going out running a few times a week is a very achievable goal and this is a problem for me because (counterintuitively) the more achievable something seems the less motivated I feel to actually do it. It's also boring and repetitive (especially having done it for many years).

This year I want to try and find some sort of balance where I might allow myself one day of less healthy eating a week but try to stay on the straight and narrow otherwise. I also need to try and work light exercise into my day (maybe go for a walk in the morning and at lunchtime) rather than going out running in the evening but being otherwise sedentary.

Mixology

In total contravention of the above goal I'd like to continuing making and enjoying many lovely cocktails. I probably made about 30 different cocktails in the last third or so of 2021 and the kitchen is beginning to look like a bar (minus the soldering equipment).

Cooking

I started learning to cook seriously around 2018 and I would now consider myself a fairly competent cook. I feel like I now know most of the classic 'riffs' of cooking and this year I'd like to try my hand at putting together some of my own dishes (we're talking different fillings for omelettes here not molecular gastronomy). The benefit of this is that I can let the ingredients that are actually available dictate what I make instead of sticking rigidly to what's in a recipe book and wasting food because I can't think of anything to do with the leftover ingredients. I'd also like to do more baking since I'm still fairly new to it.

Electronics

2021 was probably the year where I improved at electronics the most (see this post) and I want to continue building on those successes in 2022.

Guitar

Guitar is my oldest (~15 years) and most well-developed hobby. Despite this I haven't played guitar solo or with a band live since 2018 (obviously Covid happened/is happening but that's only part of the issue.) I've decided that the solution is to take the plunge and start doing open mic nights and/or jam nights at local venues. This would hopefully give me the opportunity to network and find other people who like to play the same stuff. I do have a YouTube channel (with the sum total of 1 video of myself playing guitar) and this is sort of ok as a stop-gap but it just isn't the same as playing music with a group of people who are passionate about it.

Programming

As well as being my job (sort of) programming is something I really enjoy doing for fun. Like guitar it's getting quite long in the tooth and I'm reasonably confident in my abilities. On top of the usual work-related topics some specific things I'd like to look into are modding games (in particular Crash Bandicoot) and writing Android apps. If I can find the time I'd also like to contribute to an open source project.

Media

In 2021 I read 7 books which isn't many but it's still probably the most I've read in a year. I played through 6 games (which has been my yearly average since about 2018) and watched probably about 30 or 40 films. 2022 will probably be a mixture of old media that I'd like to revisit (I'm currently playing through the Sly Cooper series remaster on PS3) and newer stuff like Resident Evil Village which (Lady D notwithstanding) I know nothing about.

Go Skydiving

I'm never been a huge fan of heights but jumping out of a plane is something I really want to try before I die and 2022 could be the year!

Anyway that's it. Let's see how I do one year on!

Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

So in early 2021 I repaired my first piece of broken electronics. Electronics has been a semi-serious interest of mine on and off since 2013ish but I mostly just read a load of books and never really attempted to do anything practical (outside of a few very minor things.) As I'm sure was the case for many people, lockdown provided me with an opportunity to revisit some of my old hobbies, so electronics got a second chance at life. In 2020 I bought myself a bench power supply (Lavolta BPS305), digital oscilloscope (Rigol DS1052E) and hot air re-work station (Newacalox 858D) and set about scaring my partner by threatening to fix things.

After a ton of procrastination I finally got round to fixing something. The patient in question was my Fender Frontman 25R (25W) which was buzzing and had a loose input jack. I was pretty confident that both issues were caused by a dry solder joint which turned out to be the case. Since it's a solid-state amp I spent way more time taking the thing apart than actually diagnosing and fixing the problem (all the pots had to come off the front and I ended up disconnecting all the power supply cables to make working with the board a bit easier.) Identifying and reflowing the bad joint only took a few minutes. I also found the service manual online which gave me the opportunity to do a bit of reverse engineering. All in all a useful learning experience and much easier than I expected.

Since then I've built this (I had to order a second one because the original fell victim to my terrible soldering skills - the second attempt was significantly better) and now I can stop using my phone as a signal generator which is nice. I still really need to get a proper soldering iron (thinking Hakko or Weller) because I'm currently making life needlessly difficult with my cheap soldering gun from Maplin. I could also do with a better workspace - right now I'm doing all my soldering on an offcut of wood in the one corner of the kitchen that hasn't been buried under my cooking equipment. My next project is to use the signal generator to test out some BJT transistor biasing configurations (common emitter, emitter follower etc.) after which I'll probably venture into the exciting world of op amps.
